Frequently Asked Questions What's the difference in air filters? Air filters were originally designed to protect the equipment from dirt, sediment and debris that was being pulled into the system every time the blower would kick on pulling air from the residence. As we began to tighten up homes in the 70's, filters took on a whole new focus as they are now used to clean the air we breathe as well as protect our investment in equipment. One of the most important investments you can make when reviewing replacement of your heating and cooling system is the type of filtering system you need to protect this investment and your family. What does SEER mean? SEER Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio; a measure of cooling efficiency for air conditioners and heat pumps. The higher the SEER, the more energy efficient the unit. The U.S. Government's minimum SEER rating is 10. As of 01/23/06 this minimum standard will be raised to 13SEER. What is AFUE? Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. A measure of a gas furnace's efficiency in converting fuel to energy - the higher the rating, the more efficient the unit. The minimum standard is 80% as of this time. What is Indoor Air Quality? According to the EPA, "Indoor pollution sources that release gases or particles into the air are the primary cause of indoor air quality problems in homes. Inadequate ventilation can increase indoor pollutant levels by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute emissions from indoor sources and by not carrying indoor air pollutants out of the home. High temperature and humidity levels can also increase concentrations of some pollutants". And why is this suddenly a problem? According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, "(seasonal/perennial allergies; hay fever; nasal allergies) Approximately 75% of all allergy sufferers have indoor/outdoor allergies as their primary allergy. (Many people with allergies usually have more than one type of allergy.) Approximately 10 million people are allergic to cat dander, the most common pet allergy. The most common indoor/outdoor allergy triggers are: tree, grass and weed pollen; mold spores; dust mite and cockroach allergen; and, cat, dog and rodent dander." All are components of Indoor Air Quality problems that exist in ALL homes. What is a system? A system is the components of equipment that heat and cool your home. These components can also affect Indoor Air Quality by adding or removing humidity, move air, dirt, dander, pollen, pet hair, dust mites and dander around in your home through air flow at the blower unit. What size system does my home need? A proper system size is based on the "Heat Gain" your home takes in on hot days from the outside plus the size of your rooms, ceiling height, insulation, windows, insulation and exposure with "Heat Loss" your home losses on a cold day to maintain a comfortable setting. This is the correct method to properly size a heating and cooling system for your home. This "Heat Loss" - "Heat Gain" is completed at NO charge to you when a home survey is completed for replacement of an existing heating and cooling system. |
